The Similans are regularly included in the lists of top diving destinations of the world. They offer at least 25 individual dive sites, and the underwater visibility here is the best you can find in Thailand. Its variety of fish species is really amazing. Along with lots of colourful fish like lionfish or clownfish, you may also spot larger creatures like manta ray or whale shark.

To make it even more ideal, the finest white sand and turquoise water beaches, with even a few hiking trails and viewpoints, compliment the magnificent underwater sights of the Similans.

Officially protected as part of the Mu Ko Similan National Park, an area of 140 square kilometres, which also includes Koh Bon and Koh Tachai, remains free of any private development. There are no roads, motorcycles, banks or ATMs, big resorts or restaurants. Tiny shops sell only basic goods, and restaurants are open only at meal time 07:30-09:00, 11:30-14:00 and 18:30-20:00.

Only at Koh Meang, Koh Similan and Koh Tachai you can find a simple accommodation like bungalows and campsites. Some of them even have air conditioners. If the real tropical paradise experience away from noisy civilization is what you are looking for, then the Similan Islands are the place to visit!

During the high season from November to April, one can expect to find up to 50 dive boats seeking shelter in the bay of Koh Similan, the biggest island in the group, and the mooring buoys are very difficult to obtain. If all moorings are taken anchorage is only possible on the outer edge of the bay in 15-30 meters.

The bay has a beautiful white sand beach and interesting forest walks. The climb to the top of the distinctive rock formation called Donald Duck, overlooking the north end of the beach, is worthwhile. There is easy access from the beach or the boat to excellent snorkelling and diving around the rocks on the north side of the bay.

High season in the Similan Islands is from December until April when the monsoon stays far away. The best period to visit is March when the winds are calm and the water is clear. The national park is closed from May 16 to November 15, but the dates may vary each year.
